Romania and Turkey
Since the time of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul has been an important city for bird keeping. Its geographical location along their migration route has led to the establishment of a bird-keeping culture with many various social platforms. Today, this culture is endangered: keeping songbirds such as gold- and green-finches may soon vanish due to Turkey’s adaptation to the criteria requested for the European Union candidacy. This work is about the birdmen of Istanbul and focuses on the shrouded relationship between the bird and the birdman, one full of contradictions, love, possession and pleasure.
