Ville Moyenne, or average town, is how Château-du-Loir, located in the Sarthe department and home to my grand parents for over twenty years, qualifies itself on its website. Through Château-du-Loir, Ville Moyenne embodies the paradox of French rural townships stranded between disused centers and new generic and blind settlements. Blind because they have no consideration for the environment in which they have settled. Strolling through Château-du-Loir creates a striking sense of absence of conscience, the violence of a lack of steering. Limp commitments for the continuous present at hand, proving the city’s inability to consider its past or define the identity of its present.
